Position:     Academic Counselor
Academic Development Center (Full-Time, 12 Month Contract)

Scope: An Academic Counselor’s primary responsibilities include the development of and the providing of academic counseling and coordinating programs like Support our Students (SOS), academic probation, undeclared advising, teaching a section of U100 in the Fall, and assisting with outreach activities.

Report to the Director of the Academic Development Center.
 
 
I.    Basic Responsibilities:

A.  Academic Counseling Program

  1. Manage academic counseling caseload
  2. Keep current with professional academic counseling literature
  3. Program development

   
B.    Support our Student (SOS) Program

  1. Coordinate SOS referrals
  2. Manage SOS referral caseload
  3. Program development


C.    Academic Probation Program

  1. Coordinate Program
  2. Manage Academic Probation caseload
  3. Program development


D.    Advising

  1. Manage undeclared advisee caseload
  2. Advise undeclared students


E.    Teaching

  1. Teach U100 in the Fall

                           
F.    Outreach Activities

  1. Speaking to classrooms, groups, etc.
  2. Marketing


G.    Summer Passport Assistance

  1. Assist University Testing Office and First-Year Office as needed during summer months on specific Passport dates.

II.     Essential Duties can include the following but are not limited to these duties:
 

A.    Academic Counseling Program (ACP)

  1. Manage academic counseling case load
  2. Counsel students with academic problems
  3. Caseload may consist of both individual clients and groups
  4. Developing the ACP program
  5. Consistently finding ways to improve the program
  6. Utilize conferences and literature
  7. Keep current on professional academic counseling literature
  8. Participate in bi-weekly staff supervision/consultation
  9. Read latest in academic theory, application, and literature
  10. Attend academic and/or student retention related conferences/workshops


B.    Support our Student (SOS)

  1. Coordinate SOS referrals
  2. Proactive efforts via phone calling, e-mailing, developing relationships with faculty, staff, academic departments, and other campus offices to generate referrals
  3. Facilitate SOS referrals
  4. Receiving and evaluating referrals
  5. Contacting and meeting with referred students
  6. Identify at risk students and refer them appropriately
  7. Referring student to the appropriate resources and ensuring that the student is taken care of.
  8. Provide feedback.
  9. Serve on and refer to the Student of Concern Committee
  10. Developing the SOS program
  11. Consistently finding ways to improve the program
  12. Utilize conferences and literature


C.    Advising undeclared students

  1. Coordinate the advising of undeclared students
  2. Manage undeclared caseload
  3. Meet with undeclared student at the appropriate times
  4. Advise and build schedules for undeclared students
  5. Advise students on career counseling opportunities
  6. Advise students on the Change of Program procedure.


D.    Teaching

  1. Teach U100 section in the Fall


E.    Outreach Activities

  1. Speaking to classrooms, groups, etc.
  2. Speak at Passport to students or parents
  3. Conduct training with faculty, staff, advisors
  4. Develop and conduct workshops and seminars
  5. Network with residence halls, academic departments and campus offices and provide info. as needed


F.    Summer Passport Assistance

  1. Assist University Testing Office and First-Year Office as needed during summer months on specific Passport dates       
  2. Build schedules for undeclared students
  3. Provide testing assistance during Passports
  4. Work at Resource Fair

IV.     Qualifications:

ACU is affiliated with the fellowship of the Church of Christ. This position requires the employee to be a professing Christian and to be willing to support the Christian mission of ACU.

  1. Master’s degree in counseling psychology or related area
  2. Licensed or in the process of being licensed as professional counselor or in a related field
